Step 3: 1:1 Clay Sculpting — The Support Problem



A standing figure in clay is supported by its own base. A crucified figure is not. The corpus must be built on an internal support armature that holds the body in the correct suspended posture while the clay is being modeled — arms extended, weight dropping, head inclined — without the armature itself distorting the clay surface. Step 4: Lost-Wax Casting — Small Parts, Large Precision
The crown of thorns, the INRI titulus, and the nail elements are cast separately from the main corpus in most commissions, then attached during the chasing and finishing stage. Step 6: Patination — The Color of Sacrifice
