How to Winterize Outdoor Fountain Systems & Control Algae

Winterizing & Algae Control: How to Keep Your Outdoor Fountain Running for Decades

I’m the Chief Maintenance Engineer at Yun Sculpture.

I have seen beautiful fountains crack in one night.
I have seen bronze patina destroyed by one careless cleaning.

Maintenance is not a chore.

It is insurance.

Every fountain in our [outdoor fountain collection →] is built for decades of beauty — but only with proper care.

If you want your fountain to look new in 50 years, listen carefully.

PART 1 — SUMMER CARE

(Algae & Water Level Control)

Summer is when most damage begins.

Not from cold.

From neglect.

Why Pumps Burn Out

The #1 cause of pump failure?

Low water level.

Water evaporates faster than you think.

When water drops below intake level:

  • Pump runs dry
  • Motor overheats
  • Seals crack
  • Pump dies

A $150 problem becomes a $1,000 headache.

DO:

  • Check water level weekly
  • Keep intake fully submerged
  • Clean debris from pump cage

DON’T:

  • Let fountain “run a little low”
  • Ignore splashing loss
  • Assume rain will fix it

This is basic fountain pump care.

Fountain Algae Control (Without Ruining Your Stone)

Green water is not just ugly.

It is biological growth feeding on minerals and sunlight.

But here is where owners make a catastrophic mistake.

🚨 The Bleach Mistake

Never use bleach.

I repeat.

Never use Bleach.

Bleach:

  • Eats stone sealers
  • Lightens marble
  • Destroys bronze patina
  • Damages pump rubber seals

I have seen a $25 bottle of bleach ruin a $20,000 fountain.

Instead use:

Non-Toxic Algaecide
✔ Fountain-safe enzyme treatments
✔ UV clarifier (for large systems)

DO:

  • Add small weekly dose
  • Brush algae before it thickens
  • Change water every 1–2 months

DON’T:

  • Pour household chemicals
  • Use pressure washers on marble
  • Scrub bronze aggressively

This is how to clean outdoor fountain surfaces safely.

Sunlight Strategy

Full sun = faster algae.

If possible:

  • Install partial shade
  • Use darker basin interiors
  • Keep water circulating constantly

Stagnant water grows slime.

Moving water stays cleaner.

For smaller spaces with less sun exposure, a [wall fountain →] naturally reduces algae risk thanks to its shallow basin design.

PART 2 — BRONZE VS. STONE CARE

Different materials.

Different rules.

At Yun Sculpture, we work primarily with Natural Marble and Silicon Bronze.

They are durable.

But not indestructible.

Not sure which material suits your climate? Read our [Bronze vs Marble Fountain Guide →] before committing.

Bronze Fountain Care (Annual Waxing Rule)

Bronze develops a protective patina.

That patina is valuable.

UV light fades it.

Acid rain attacks it.

Once a year:

Apply clear paste wax.

Yes.

Wax your bronze.

How to Wax Bronze:

  1. Clean surface gently
  2. Dry completely
  3. Apply thin wax coat
  4. Buff lightly with soft cloth

This seals the patina.

Protects from moisture.

Reduces UV fading.

It takes 20 minutes.

DO:

  • Wax annually
  • Use clear museum-grade wax
  • Clean before application

DON’T:

  • Use abrasive pads
  • Use acidic cleaners
  • Strip patina unless restoring professionally

Our [Bronze Fountains] require less maintenance than stone.

But they still require care.

Marble & Stone Fountain Care

Natural marble is dense.

Much denser than cast concrete.

But it is still porous.

Every 2–3 years:

Reseal the stone.

Use breathable penetrating sealer.

Never glossy coatings.

DO:

  • Reseal periodically
  • Clean with neutral pH cleaner
  • Inspect for hairline cracks

DON’T:

  • Use vinegar
  • Use bleach
  • Let leaves sit and stain

PART 3 — WINTERIZING (THE CRITICAL GUIDE)

This is the most important section.

If you skip everything else, do not skip this.

The Physics of Freezing

Water expands 9% when frozen.

Nine percent.

That expansion creates thousands of pounds of pressure.

Concrete cracks instantly.

Marble can crack.

Plumbing always cracks.

Bronze survives.

Pipes do not.

This is why learning how to winterize outdoor fountain systems properly is essential.

STEP 1 — Drain Completely

Turn off power.

Drain all water.

Use:

Shop Vac
✔ Towels
✔ Compressed air for pipes

Do not leave puddles in bowls.

Even a small pool can freeze and expand.

Using a shop vacuum to fully drain a marble outdoor fountain basin as the first step in how to winterize outdoor fountain systems.

Caption: Removing every drop prevents expansion pressure from cracking stone.

STEP 2 — Remove the Pump

This is critical.

The pump must never sit in frozen water.

Never.

Pumps contain:

  • Rubber seals
  • Bearings
  • Plastic housings

Freezing destroys them.

Winter Pump Storage:

Option 1 (Best):
Store pump indoors submerged in bucket of water.

This keeps seals moist.

Option 2:
Store dry indoors (acceptable).

Never leave pump in frozen basin.

This is non-negotiable fountain pump care.

STEP 3 — Dry & Cover

After draining:

  • Wipe interior dry
  • Remove debris
  • Install Fountain Cover

Not a tarp.

Not plastic sheet.

A custom-fitted heavy duty cover.

Why Custom Covers Matter

Loose tarps:

  • Trap condensation
  • Rub against stone
  • Tear in wind

A Custom Fountain Cover:

  • Breathable
  • Secure
  • Snow-load resistant
  • UV resistant

High-margin accessory?

Yes.

Snow Is Heavy

Snow melts.

Water seeps.

Refreezes.

Expansion cracks joints.

Don’t let that happen.

PART 4 — TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Even well-maintained fountains develop issues.

Here’s how to diagnose quickly.

Fountain Making Noise?

Possible Causes:

  • Low water
  • Debris in impeller
  • Pump vibration

Fix:

  • Refill water
  • Clean intake
  • Add rubber pad under pump

Excessive Splashing?

Usually leveling issue.

Or pump too strong.

Water escaping = water loss.

Water loss = pump burnout.

Check basin level with spirit level.

Repair Leaking Fountain

Leaks are usually:

  • Improper installation
  • Cracked plumbing
  • Failed sealant

Installation mistakes causing leaks?
Check our [Fountain Installation Guide].

Never ignore leaks.

Water undermines foundations.

White Powder (Efflorescence)?

Mineral deposits from hard water.

Clean gently.

Improve drainage.

Use distilled water if severe.
